Getting Started

For Our Therapeutic Horsemanship Program

Over 100 people are on our waitlist. Flexibility may help you enroll sooner, as most applicants prefer after-school hours. Current participants have priority before new spots are opened.

The therapeutic horsemanship program runs Monday-Thursday, 9:30 am – 5:30 pm. We are closed on weekends indefinitely. The weight limit for riding lessons is 200 lbs; ground lessons are available for those over this limit. PATH Intl. requires medical forms for participation.

To apply to be on our waitlist or check availability or any other questions, please contact the Program Director via 910-281-3223 or programs@prancing-horse.org.

For Our Senior Program

The senior program primarily takes place on the ground, with limited riding opportunities based on horse availability and participant needs. It includes liberty work and “join up” to build relationships with horses, as well as activities like grooming, leading, and general horse care. This program aims to provide participants with a sense of purpose, emotional well-being, social interaction, learning experiences, and improved health.

The senior program consists of groups with 5 or more participants, each visiting for a 2-hour session. Each participant is encouraged to make a $20 donation per visit. During this session, they have the option to engage in horsemanship activities while interacting with peers. Medical forms are required only if riding is involved, as per PATH Intl.’s standards. Liability waivers and photo consents must be completed before arrival.

The program runs in early spring (February–May) and late fall (September–November) for optimal weather conditions. Exceptions are possible upon request, but visitors should consider the farm’s weather. Visits usually take place on Thursday and Friday mornings to fit the Therapeutic Horsemanship schedule.

For more information, please reach out to the Program Director via 910-281-3223 or programs@prancing-horse.org.

For Our Freedom Reins Program

Freedom Reins at Prancing Horse is a veterans program using natural horsemanship to build relationships with horses. Veterans learn horse behaviors through grooming, groundwork, and longe line exercises. Horses communicate through body language, and participants learn to respond in kind. These lessons help reduce anxiety both during sessions and in daily life, offering an alternative to traditional therapies for stress from service.

Veterans and active-duty military members have various opportunities to engage in the Freedom Reins program. In collaboration with WWP and PATH Intl., individuals can visit the farm for weekly hour-long sessions to work with a horse and certified instructor at their own pace. Organizations can also participate in longer, two-hour sessions with their own horses in a group setting, highlighting the benefits of working with horses. Participants who attend group sessions may choose to return for individual lessons to further explore therapeutic horsemanship.

“This is the first program I’ve experienced that really works. The horses, teachers, and volunteers helped ease me back into a normal world.”
